Analyze Every Subdomain's SEO Footprint
The Subdomains report lists all subdomains detected for a root domain, each with its own keyword count, visibility score, and estimated traffic. It's the fastest way to understand how a large site distributes its organic presence — or to check if a competitor's blog, shop, or support site is eating into your keyword space.
What you can achieve:
Audit your own site's subdomain structure: Identify which subdomains are driving organic traffic and which are invisible to search engines.
Analyze competitor subdomains: Discover if a rival is using a separate subdomain (e.g., blog.competitor.com) to dominate content in your niche.
Detect orphaned or underperforming subdomains: Find subdomains with zero visibility that may be wasting crawl budget or creating duplicate content issues.
Getting Started
- Navigate to Site Analysis → Subdomains in the left sidebar.
- Enter the root domain (e.g.,
example.com) and select your regional database. - Click Search. The report lists all detected subdomains with their SEO metrics.
- Click any subdomain in the table to run a full Site Analysis on that subdomain specifically.
- Use the export button to download the full subdomain list with metrics for your records.
Key Metrics Explained
- Subdomain: The full subdomain URL (e.g.,
blog.example.com,shop.example.com). Click any entry to drill into its keyword data. - Keywords: The number of queries for which this subdomain appears in the Top 100.
- Visibility: The subdomain's prominence in search results, weighted by search volume of its ranked keywords.
- Estimated Traffic: Predicted monthly organic visits to this subdomain specifically.
- SDR: Authority score for the subdomain. Note that subdomains often have lower SDR than the root domain.
Pro Tip: Find a Competitor's Hidden Content Engine
Many top-ranking sites hide their best SEO strategy behind a subdomain. This workflow exposes it.
- Run Subdomains on a major competitor in your niche.
- Sort by Keywords or Visibility (descending) to find their highest-traffic subdomain.
- Click that subdomain to open its full Keywords report.
- The goal: A competitor's blog or resource subdomain often ranks for thousands of informational keywords. These are your content gap opportunities.
| ⚠️ Important: Serpstat detects subdomains based on its crawl data. Subdomains with very low traffic or those recently created may not appear in the report. For a complete technical audit of your own subdomains, combine this report with Site Audit. |
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why don't I see all subdomains of my site in the report?
A: Serpstat only shows subdomains that rank for at least one keyword in its database. Subdomains with no organic rankings or very recent subdomains may not appear.
Q: Can I analyze a subdomain directly instead of through this report?
A: Yes — enter the subdomain URL directly into the search bar in any Site Analysis report (e.g., blog.example.com) to analyze it in isolation.
Q: Does www count as a subdomain?
A: Yes, www.example.com is technically a subdomain. If your site uses www, it will appear in this list. Serpstat typically treats the www and root domain as the same entity, but it depends on how they're set up.
